"Chris Stewart’s memoir of buying a totally dilapidated farmhouse in Andalusia is one of my absolute favourites. At thirteen, my mum uprooted me from a very comfortable life in Surrey and plonked me in a rundown farmhouse in the Brecon Beacons - whilst Stewart’s weather in Spain was undeniably better than mine, that same level of charm and chaos jumped out at me from every page.

The memoir is all about embracing a radically different way of life and finding it totally suffused with joy. Set in a tiny, isolated valley in the mountains, the book paints the most vivid picture of the landscape. You feel like you’ve walked through the olive groves, the rushing rivers and the jagged mountains. Stewart writes about the place with such warmth and love that you feel you know it - his anecdotes about quirky neighbours and coming to grips with the local culture resonate with anyone who’s tried something new and stepped outside their comfort zone. He deals with temperamental weather and temperamental plumbing with light and humour - sure, there’s no water, but it’ll be funny in a few days.

I absolutely adored this book - and the title “Driving Over Lemons” really captures the feeling of the whole piece. It’s a bit surprising, a bit different, and totally lovely."
