One of the BBC's '100 Novels that Shaped the World'

The Far Pavilions is the story of an English man - Ashton Pelham-Martyn - brought up as a Hindu. It is the story of his passionate, but dangerous love for Juli, an Indian princess. It is the story of divided loyalties, of friendship that endures till death, of high adventure and of the clash between East and West.

To the burning plains and snow-capped mountains of this great, humming continent, M.M. Kaye brings her exceptional gifts of storytelling and meticulous historical accuracy, plus her insight into the human heart.

'Magnificent' Evening Standard

'A long, romantic adventure story of the highest calibre . . . wildly exciting' Daily Telegraph

"A story based in the days of the British Raj, written by a lady whose love of India, and what is now modern day Pakistan is reflected in the description of colours ,smells, language and traditions of the county where her family had deep roots as part of the British society in India.

Although the storyline is described as a "love story", this is just a thread to carry the reader through a timeline from the Sepoy Mutiny ,through to the defence of the Kabul residency. All well researched and written with an authenticity.

Descriptions of all demographics, caste and religions ,palaces ,hovels, boats , mountains, deserts and plains.

At 950 pages, it is a hefty tome - one I have re-read many times and inspired me me to book my first trip to India with Explore. I have since returned 6 times and another booking for 2025 recently made.

One does need quite a hefty tome to read on public transport to the airport and then on the flight to India (and then, sadly, back again)"
