"This is a fairly short novel, translated from the Spanish. It was apparently the first novel about the Spanish maquis (who continued the fight against Franco's dictatorship) to be published in Spain and was inspired by real people and events. The story is of four Republicans hiding in the mountains after the Civil War. It is gripping and sad, very evocative of the landscape and of life in the mountain villages, many of which are probably now abandoned. Spanish friends of my age (late 50s) tell me that the echoes of the Civil War continued to divide families and communities as they grew up. This novel lays bare the roots of such divisions, showing the impact of civil war in small communities. It really peopled the Spanish mountains in my imagination."
